Here's the Detailed Answers:

  • Most important is that they are made from Flexible PVC. That's the same PVC as used to make window frames, plumbing pipe and other building products, but special plasticizers are added that make the tiles into a material with rubber characteristics.

  • They are so flexible, that a person can easily bend the tile by hand into a tube so that the edges touch each other.

  • The tiles are 12" square. This makes for easy installation, plus they do not require any messy adhesives, and this means a lower installed cost than rubber tiles.

  • Rubber tiles, typically installed by a contractor, usually cost between $6.50 and $10.00 per square foot installed, including the tile. Many times it can be higher for small installations, and where extensive trimming is required. In addition there's a real risk that the adhesive may lift from the floor at a later date, which can occur for unexpected reasons.

  • Interlocking tiles can be installed by any handy person with simple tools, a rubber mallet and a utility knife. It only takes about 30 seconds or so per tile. Trimming is very easy and so the final cost is far less than rubber tiles. Since adhesive is not required, there is no risk of bonding failure, and to add to this, there's the advantage that tiles can be removed and reused at any time.
The final cost: Around $3.35 per square foot, plus the labor cost for a handy man, which may be zero if you do it yourself.

  • When installed the interlocks are completely hidden from view.

  • Concrete or wood sub floors do not require any preparation other than to ensure that they are swept clean and do not have bumps in the surface. The tiles can also be installed over uncured concrete, wood floors, old tile, painted floors or floors that have cracks and pits up to 3/8" across.

  • Installation is easy. It only takes about 30 seconds per tile, plus some time for trimming to get close to any walls. To install just place one tile next to another, and then press or roll the edges to make the interlock engage. It's just like a polybag - Once done, it stays in place. To remove, simply peel apart by gripping at one corner and lifting.

  • Even trimming is easy. It can be cut with a table saw, or simply hold a straight edge where a cut is required, and score with a utility 'Stanley' knife about three times. Then locate the score line just over the edge of a bench and hold in place on the bench while bending the other side slightly downward. This opens up the score and then tile then can be cut through almost as easily as cheese.
